The Commonwealth of Australia was formed on 1 January 1901, under the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act 1900 (Imp) (original as enacted copy) an Act of the United Kingdom parliament. The Constitution of Australia (reprint including amendments which have taken place over time) is the supreme law under which Australia operates. Other legislation with constitutional significance in Australia are the Statue of Westminster Adoption Act 1942 (retroactive to 1939) and the Australia Act 1986. The Australia Act 1986, was passed by the use of legislative powers conferred by enabling acts passed by the Parliaments of every Australian State, voiding the need for a referendum to change the Constitution.
